Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a holiday set aside to honor our mothers. Most all of us owe our mothers so much for all the hard work, love, and patience they showed while raising us. There is nothing quite like the love of a mother. Traditional Gifts Although it’s great to be original and get your mother something special and different, there are always the traditional gifts. Each year the most popular Mother’s Day gifts in the United States include flowers, pampering gifts like pedicures, greeting cards, jewelry, and, of course, taking your mother out to eat on Sunday. The important thing is to remember your mother.

Mother’s Day is a day set aside to express love, respect and thanks to mothers. The day is observed by giving gifts, visiting, or taking mothers out for dinner and celebrations. Many other countries of the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year. Mother’s Day is a holiday that honors mothers. It is celebrated on the second Sunday in May in many countries throughout the world. Festivals honoring mothers and mother goddesses can be traced back to ancient times. Mother’s Day is a special day when we can celebrate the special people in our lives. They can be your mother, sister, cousin, grandma, aunt, a family friend or even a teacher.

Different countries celebrate Mother’s Day at different times, for example, the United Kingdom celebrates it on the fourth Sunday of Lent, Norway on the second Sunday of February, and Egypt the first day of Spring. The Philippines and Japan celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.

Various forms of Mother’s Day have been celebrated by different societies throughout the history of the world. The official holiday in the United States, however, began with a lady named Ann Jarvis in 1868. Ann tried to establish a Mother’s Friendship Day after the Civil War. She wasn’t successful during her lifetime, however her daughter Anna Marie Jarvis began to work on a Mother’s Day holiday after Ann died.

In 1910 Anna Marie got the state of West Virginia to declare Mother’s Day an official holiday. The rest of the nation soon followed and in 1914 it was declared a national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson. Since then Mother’s Day has become one of the most popular holidays of the year.

How do you celebrate Mother’s Day? Do you make breakfast in bed for your mum, or give her a card or gifts? Although these are common things to do in Australia today, mothers have been celebrated in many different ways for a very long time. In ancient times, thousands of years ago, many cultures would celebrate a mother goddess whom they thought of as the mother of everyone.

In ancient Egypt, Isis was worshipped as a mother goddess and in Greece they worshipped a goddess named Rhea. Festivals to celebrate mother goddesses were usually held in Spring because it represents new life and fertility. An example of one such celebration was the Roman festival of Hilaria that honoured the mother goddess Cybele. In many places around the world, Mother’s Day is still celebrated in Spring, but in Australia we celebrate it in Autumn.

The Mother’s Day holiday in the United States was started by Anna Jarvis. She wanted to honor her mother, whose dream it was to have a day that celebrated mothers. On May 10, 1908, the first official observance of Mother’s Day was held at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. (The church is now known as the International Mother’s Day Shrine.) Within five years, almost every state was observing the day. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday.

Fast Food

What is fast food?

Fast food is the term for a kind of food that people eat from a restaurant, cafe or take-out where food is prepared and served quickly. The restaurants that sell fast food are called “fast food shops” or “fast food restaurants”. Some of the more common fast food restaurants are McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King and Wendy’s. Today we are going to have a look at each of these fast food restaurants, how they were created and what they sell the most of.

McDonald’s is an American corporation that operates one of the largest chains of fast food restaurants in the world. There are over 36,000 McDonald’s stores around the world. These stores are in 119 countries and territories. McDonald’s has the second most stores of all fast food chains worldwide coming in behind the chain known as Subway. Did you know McDonald’s all around the world serve almost 54 million people each day? That is a lot of people! The first McDonald’s was opened by siblings Richard and Maurice (Mac) McDonald in 1940.

This restaurant was located on Route 66 in San Bernardino, California. Mc’Donalds mainly serve hamburgers, cheeseburgers, burger, chicken nuggets, french fries, breakfast items, soft drinks, milkshakes and desserts. They have introduced healthier options and have kids meals available too. Frozen Cokes are a popular item on the menu in New Zealand and Australia. McDonald’s offers both counter service and drive-through services with indoor and outdoor seating as some restaurants. According to Google the most popular item on the McDonald’s menu is french fries! Google it if you don’t believe me!

KFC also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken is an American fast food restaurant chain that specializes in fried chicken. The headquarters is located in Louisville, Kentucky. Measuring the sales of KFC they are the second largest restaurant chain after McDonald’s. There are almost 20,000 locations of KFC globally in 123 countries and territories as of December 2015. KFC was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, an entrepreneur.

He began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky during the Great Depression. Sanders saw the potential of the restaurant franchising concept and the first “Kentucky Fried Chicken” franchise opened in Utah in 1952. KFC was one of the first American fast food cagins to expand internationally. KFC’s original product is pressure fried chicken pieces seasoned with Sanders’ recipe of 11 herbs and spices.  (his trade secret). The menu has since expanded to include sandwiches, wraps, salads, french fries, coleslaw, potato and gravy, desserts and soft drinks. Chicken pot pie is the number one most popular item at KFC, but since we don’t have that in New Zealand I am guessing that popcorn chicken that comes in at number 2 would be our best seller!

Burger King

Burger King or what is often called BK is a fast food restaurant chain that comes from the United States. It sells hamburgers, french fries, soft drinks, along with other items. BK was created in 1954 in Miami, Florida by James McLamoe and David Edgerton. There are more than 15,00 Burger King restaurants worldwide in 100 countries and almost all of them are franchises. The only place in the world that is not called Burger King is Australia. The name “Burger King” was already trademarked in Australia so their BK franchises are called Hungry Jack’s. BK offers both dine in and drive through restaurants. According to Google the most popular item at Burger King is the whopper burger.

Wendy’s is an international chain of fast food restaurants founded by Dave Thomas on 15th November 1969 in Columbus Ohio. Wedny’s is an American international fast food restaurant. The company moved its headquarters to Dublin Ohio on 29th January 2006. Wendy’s menu is mostly hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, french fries and beverages. For dessert they serve frostys which are similar to Dairy Queen’s Blizzards. Wendy’s like the other fast food restaurants provides both dine in and drive through restaurants. According to Google the most popular item ordered at Wendy’s is french fries.

I hope today’s reading has shown some light into some of our favourite fast food restaurants that we have in New Zealand. French fries have definitely taken it out as the most popular fast food item from these restaurants. I cannot blame them, the french fries are most certainly the best item on the menu especially at KFC!

Indian Sweets

Going past an Indian sweet shop do you often wonder what all those different sweets are? How are they made or what are their ingredients?… I decided to put a guide together to help you find out more about these delicious sweet delights from South Asia.

Indian sweets are collectively called Mithai which is derived from the word mitha which means sweet. There are many varieties, and different types of Indian sweets but they usually come from the original recipe for the sweet.

Let’s look at the most common types of Mithai that people consume especially at special occasions like weddings, parties and functions, and festivals like Diwali, Eid and Vaisakhi.

Many of the recipes for the sweets originated centuries ago with many of the sweets being cooked at home.

Some families still cook such sweets at home especially if they have elders in the family who know how to make them. However, the majority of people buy them at “sweet centres” or restaurants as take-outs or order them as gifts to be given at specific events like a wedding.

Sometimes called Burfi or Barfee, has its named derived from the Persian word “barf” which means snow since barfi is similar to ice/snow in appearance.

This sweet is made from condensed milk, cream and sugar. The simple type is usually of a white or creamy colour and has a thick sweet texture. It is usually available in small rectangle or diamond shapes. This particular sweet has many varieties, because you can add almost anything to the recipe, depending what you like.

Popular during the festival of Diwali, this is a sticky chewy sweet which is usually of an orange colour. It is typically made from a type of wheat flour called maida, saffron, ghee (type of butter) and sugar.

A deep fryer or wok filled with very hot oil is used to make it. The mixture is usually squeezed from a hand held cone directly into the hot oil, allowing it to deep fry. The resulting shapes are circular or pretzel like and they are then soaked in syrup to give it the sticky texture.

The sweets are served warm or cold. Lime juice is sometimes added to the syrup, as well as rosewater or other flavours. It can be eaten warm or cold. Some people even have the sweet served in milk. The origin of the sweet is from the middle east, where it’s called Zlebia. Therefore, its likely that during the period of Muslim rule in India, this dish was introduced in the country. When this happened they replaced the Z with J in its name.

Gulab Jamun

This is a deep and sweet tasting mithai and very popular.

It is made from khoya (milk powder), mixed together with flour and sugar, and then deep fried. Either in ball shapes or rounded rectangular shapes. Once fried and brown, it is coated all over with a sugar syrup flavored with cardamom seeds and rosewater, kewra or saffron. Dessicated coconut if often used as a finishing touch.

The word “gulab jamun” comes from Persian, gulab, “rose” referring to the rosewater-scented syrup and the hindi word “jamun.”

Halwa, also called halva, halveh, helwa, or halvah is a sweet usually made with semolina or wheat can can include nuts. Traditional halwa uses khoya milk. Ingredients for halwa include ghee, milk, sweetened condensed milk and flour or semolina. There are many different types of halwa available in sweet shops. This includes Pista Halwa which contains pistachios , or Gajjar Halwa which is carrot based. It can look a little like Turkish Delight in the shops.

There are many more types of Indian sweets you will see in a sweet shop and some will vary depending on the region of India. For example, a Punjabi sweet shop will not have all the sweets a Gujarati sweet shop will have. It’s a good idea to try different sweets because you never know you might discover a new favourite!

Indian sweets do come with a health warning though because they can be quite high in fat and calories due to the rich ingredients used in most of them. Therefore, if you are waistline conscious, have them as a treat rather than too frequently.

Alice the alien – Narrative Writing

Alice the Alien

Once upon a time, long, long ago, there lived an alien named Alice. Alice was a kind and respectful alien. Every night when Alice goes to Terra (Earth) to visit the kids, she gets greeted by unpleasant humans.

The cause of all of this was they thought she wanted to hurt them when all she wants is to help the kids fall asleep and help them have happy dreams. Alice had never tried to hurt anybody since. Alice was a delightful alien.

Her personality is not like the other mean aliens. Alice gets bored from sitting on the Luna and waiting for the Sun to go down. In the meantime, she dreams of magnificent and tremendous ideas of dreams for her to put in each snoring children’s head.

Every time Alice was on the moon, she wondered what was going on with Terra, and when she came back from visiting Terra, she was still thinking about Terra. Alice said in her head, “I wish I could stay on Terra forever”.

Later that day, when Alice went to Terra (Earth), Alice returned home due to the thundering storm and lightning strike. When the humans found that Alice did not arrive, they figured it was because of the rain.

The humans wondered why the alien had not shown itself, even if it was raining. It seemed very odd. The next day when Alice showed up, the humans went into hiding. They thought her behaviour was suspicious, so they went into hiding.

The humans watched her meticulously in the bushes. Alice got out of the space capsule very carefully, without touching the water. They watched with the thought that she appeared to be apprehensive because she avoided the water puddles.

The Humans watched her conscientiously climb and tumble around the dry grassy areas. After Alice finished her job down on Terra, she returned home. The humans discussed and asked each other questions, what her behaviour was? Was there any signalling that something was off?

Some thought she had gone mad, while others had crazier ideas. Following careful consideration, they came to the conclusion that water may be Alice the alien’s weakness. They hatched an evil plan and laughed maniacally.

The humans decided that they would capture the alien. They decided to set up a plan to trap her. The scheme was to put water around the space capsule landing space because she always lands in one specific spot.

After they agreed on their plan, they went to their positions and waited and waited. They all were excited about their scheme to be put into action. They quietly sat there and waited for the alien space capsule to land.

When Alice landed in her space capsule, she opened the door, and as soon as she saw it, she felt like vomiting, nevertheless, she strongly held it. Alice felt sufficient because of her surroundings.

She did not feel well enough to want to go down because of the w-w-water. She had no way out but to go back home there were no dry spots. Finally, the humans truly believed that her weakness was water.

The humans wonder what would happen if she touched water or swallowed water. The humans also wanted to know what to do with valuable information. The humans still did not know if it was just that or if there was more they desired to know.

Afterwards, they had a long chat about it and talked about their reasonable reasoning. They decided that it was not right to be mean to the alien. The cause of this was that the alien did not do anything to them.

They were even-handed being mean to the poor little alien. Alice did not like it, but she tried not to say anything because the other aliens would get mad and the humans would get hurt, which she did not want.

The humans decided they would tell the other humans to stop being mean to the aliens because some of the humans started feeling sad for Alice. Finally, to settle, they had a little vote.

The two things that you could vote for (A) we should stop being mean rather than (B) we shouldn’t stop being mean. Finally, everyone voted and guess what everybody was happy because vote A lost and vote B won.

After everyone decided to be kind, they had a party and invited Alice, the friendly alien. They had a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious party, and now they had a space alien as their friends.
