Poi Awe

Poi Awe

Poi awe (percussive device) | Collections Online - Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

(Percussive Device)

  • A poi awe was named that because of the existence of the dog-hair awe (tassels) added on as decoration. Poi are used as visual and rhythmic support to Māori cultural songs and dance performances. Performers might use a single poi or a pair, which could either be short or long cordage lengths depending on the dance and song. Traditionally, dried raupō also known as bullrush leaves were used as the ball covering, with braided muka for the cords. Today, synthetic materials are used.

  • A poi is a light, circular ball attached to a cord that is twirled with the twist of the wrists in combinations of movements, around and against the hands and body. This example is a very rare type woven in muka (flax fibre) with a technique called knotless netting.

The hit ball

Te poi patua

My hit ball

Taku poi patua

Be like hit-and-run

Kia rite pa-para patua

My ball

Taku poi e

My counter ball is flying

E rere ra e taku poi porotiti

Slope, disturbing e

Tītahataha ra, whakararuraru e

Roll on, roll on

Porotakataka rā, poro hurihuri mai

It’s the same as tiwaiwaka e

Rite tonu ki te tiwaiwaka e

When he defends himself, he will fight

Ka parepare ra, pīoioi a

Move it, move it

Whakahekeheke, e kia korikori e

Climb up and up

Piki whakarunga ra, ma muinga mai a

My counter ball, my ball!

Taku poi porotiti, taku poi e!

Ball, come closer

Poi e, whakatata mai

Ball, no different

Poi e, kaua he rerekē

Baby, come close to me

Poi e, kia piri mai ki au

Come on, hug me

Poi e, e awhi mai ra

Come on, come on

Poi e, tāpekatia mai

Dance, our love

Poi e, ō tāua aroha

Well, weld it up

Poi e, paiheretia ra

Ball, my ball

Poi, taku poi e

My ball went sideways

Rere atu taku poi, ti taha taha ra

Up and down, my ball

Whakarunga whakararo, taku poi e

My counter ball is flying

E rere ra e taku poi porotiti

Is there a problem?

This week during Maths, we are learning to find the appropriate strategy to solve each word problem, solve problems that involve multiplication and division, and use equations to express a problem. Appreciate that tens are nested in hundreds and thousands and use that knowledge to rename whole numbers. We had to learn how to find the appropriate strategy to solve each word problem, solve problems that involve multiplication and division and use equations to express a problem. We were also looking into renaming the whole numbers to make the addition and subtraction of collections of tens or hundreds easier. It was really easy to do so me and my friend got it done really fast.

My maths group worked on some really easy maths problems, which I finished really fast. It was really fun and easy for me and my friend, we answered all the questions and showed how we did it. We tried to find out different ways to solve them. It was really fun because all we had to do was just solve the number of questions. What I had to do was answer 8 word problems and show my working out. After I completed the task I had to post it. These word problems were really easy. Expect the last slide my friend got stuck on and was so confused,  so I had to help her on it. She said “the last slide (8) was really tricky to divide the numbers so I tried my very best to find an answer for the question but I couldn’t” so I helped her out.

My quote of the day: It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with word problems longer

I don’t have a highlight today because I had a writing test today and I wasn’t feeling well at all during it which led me to not be able to think straight or write. My lowlight was having to find out new methods to solve a problem because I usually use the same methods to do my work. Something to work on for this week is finding out new strategies to solve each problem. It was really easy though because most of the questions require division and I’m good at division. After that I completed the task, and I posted it on my blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Working Collabortively in a Doc

Working Collaboratively in A Doc

In this task you will be learning to work inside a Google Doc collaboratively with another person. It is important to be respectful when working simultaneously inside a single Google Doc.

You’ll need to buddy up with a partner and make sure one of you has made a copy, and shared it with the other buddy.

Task description: This week during Inquiry, we had to  make a copy of a template, and share it with the buddy we were going to be working with. Follow the instructions on the document, for what to do in each section. For this challenge we learned about using Google Docs collaboratively with a buddy. This means we both had to be working on the document at the same time. It’s important to be respectful of each other’s work and ideas when working collaboratively. We also had to use the comment function. We could watch a video if we weren’t sure how to do that. After that we completed the task, we posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Please leave a comment; thank you for visiting my blog.

Love’s 3D Shapes

Task description: This week during Maths, we learn how to identify shapes based on their properties. We had to identify shapes based on their sides, vertices and interior angles. After that we completed the task, we posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Task description: This week during reading, we are learning to monitor ourselves to finish a novel, compare and Contrast, make Inferences, and make connections. We are learning to explain a point of view of a character a justify why we think this and keep up with our group. Meaning if we fall behind we catch up. After that I completed the task, and I posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed.
