Using Direct Speech

Task description: This week during Writing, we are learning to accurately punctuate and use speech marks in our writing. Speech marks are punctuation marks that are used in pairs in various forms of writing to indicate speech or begin a direct quote. They are also called quotation marks and inverted commas. Speech marks are usually used when a character or a person is talking in a text or piece of writing, in some cases it can be used to show something that is said such as a quote from somewhere.

Many people this quotation marks and speech marks are the same but have you ever thought what the difference between quotation marks and speech marks are? Well here’s the difference, in writing, quotation marks or inverted commas, also known informally as quotes, talking marks, speech marks, quote marks, quotemarks or speechmarks, are punctuation marks placed on either side of a word or phrase in order to identify it as a quotation, direct speech or a literal title or name.

Quotation marks may be used to indicate that the meaning of the word or phrase they surround should be taken to be different from that typically associated with it, and are often used in this way to express irony. For example, in the sentence ‘The lunch lady plopped a glob of “food” onto my tray.’ The quotation marks around the word food show it is being called ironically. They are also sometimes used to emphasise a word or phrase, although this is usually considered incorrect.

The general rules of direct speech are:

  • Each new character’s speech starts on a new line.
  • Speech is opened with speech marks.
  • Each line of speech starts with a capital.
  • The line of speech ends with a comma, exclamation mark or question mark.
  • A reporting clause is used at the end (said Jane, shouted Paul, replied Mum).
  • A full stop goes after the reporting clause.
  • If the direct speech in the sentence is broken up by information about who is speaking, add in a comma or question mark or exclamation mark to end the first piece of speech and a full stop or another comma before the second piece (before the speech marks), for example: “It’s lovely,” she sighed, “but I can’t afford it right now.” / “I agree!” said Kate. “Let’s go!”

My highlight for writing this week is finishing the task because it was really easy and fun to do. I wouldn’t mind doing things like this more often. I don’t have a lowlight for writing this week as I enjoyed writing this week a lot and I didn’t find anything hard. The task was really different from what we usually do for writing. I’m really proud of how I went with this writing task so I don’t have anything for me to work on this week for writing. After that I completed the task, and I posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Please leave a comment; thank you for visiting my blog.

My quote of the day: You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page

Riddle Time

Task description: This week during Maths, we are learning to find the appropriate strategy to solve each word problem, solve problems that involve multiplication and division, and use equations to express a problem. We were also learning to appreciate that tens are nested in hundreds and thousands and use that knowledge to rename whole numbers. We were also looking into renaming the whole numbers to make the addition and subtraction of collections of tens or hundreds easier. It was really easy to do so me and my friend got it done really fast.

My maths group worked on some really easy maths riddles, which I finished really fast. It was really fun and easy for me and my friend, we answered all the questions and showed how we did it. We tried to find out different ways to solve them. It was really fun because all we had to do was just solve the number of questions.

My quote of the day: Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country.

It was really easy to complete but the last slide was a bit tricky for me. I was struggling to find the last answer because it kinda didn’t make sense. Even after a lot of hard work to figure it out I couldn’t find out the answer to the last slide. I would like to do more riddles even if it was a bit hard at times.

My highlight was being proud of myself even though I couldn’t answer the last slide because at least I tried my best to completing the last slides. I was struggling with finding the answer as the problem was a bit confusing. My low-light was taking a while finding one little answer to a riddle, but in the end I learn something for me to work one. I’m proud of myself this week for maths and I would like to work more on tasks like these. After that I completed the task, and posted it on my blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Please leave a comment; thank you for visiting my blog.

Testing Transformations

Task description: This week during Maths, we are learning to transform shapes using reflection, rotation and translation. After that we completed the task, we posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Please leave a comment; thank you for visiting my blog.

The Scholarship Jacket

Task description: This week during reading, we are learning to analyse authors values, attitudes and beliefs. After that I completed both of the task, and I posted it on my blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Please leave a comment; thank you for visiting my blog.

Food Affects Mood

Task description: This week during Inquiry, we are learning how to work through the activities and tasks with our teacher. We have a Health and P.E focus for inquiry. We are investigating the factors the contribute to a balanced and healthy lifestyle. After that we completed the task, we posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Please leave a comment; thank you for visiting my blog.

My Maps

Task description: This week during Inquiry, we were learning about Google My Maps and we had to do a challenge for it. Google My Maps is a tool that lets people create personalised maps with multiple locations, custom markers, and photos. You could use it for mapping out an event or planning a trip. To make the map even better, you can work together with your friends and family! For this Challenge we were learning how to create a map using Google My Maps. And to do this we had to make copy of this template, which had instructions on each slide for us to complete. We needed to create a Google My Map of some of our favourite places and landmarks around our city. We could briefly include a description of why you think this landmark is important. After that we completed the task, we posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Terrific Transformations

Task description: This week during Maths, we are learning to construct nets for 3D Shapes. We had to transform simple shapes using reflection, rotation and translation. After that we completed the task, we posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Dear New Government…

Task description: This week during Extension, we are learning about different problems for different age groups. What I mean by this is that parents have to worry about money and providing for their family, as for kids we don’t have to worry about things like that, but we still have our own responsibility, such as school, sports, looking after siblings, and house work.

Our main 4 topics were:

  1. Issues that may be important to our parents, units, uncles, and teachers?
  2. Issues that are important to 11-13 year olds?
  3. Issues that may be important to people who are retired (65+)?
  4. Issues that are important to toddlers?

Something no one have thought about yet was toddlers, so me and my group added another page for that because that was sometime we should be looking if we were looking at all age groups. The stick notes in pink was my group. After that I completed the task, and I posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Dawn Raid – Create Task

Task description: This week during reading, we are learning to monitor ourselves to finish a novel, compare and contrast, make Inferences, and make connections. We are learning to explain a point of view of a character a justify why we think this and keep up with our group. Meaning if we fall behind we catch up. After that I completed the task, and I posted it on our blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Please leave a comment; thank you for visiting my blog. For my first task I had to pretend I are a judge listening to Sofia’s speech (Sofia is a girl in a book we a reading called “Dawn Raid”). We had to say what our feedback and score would be. We had to create a judging report card to display this. After that I completed both of the task, and I posted it on my blog. I enjoyed this task very much, and I hope to do more like this soon. Hope you enjoyed. Please leave a comment; thank you for visiting my blog.
